to - Not Afraid to Fall
The video above captures Brian conquering “The Wall” on Mount Washington in New Hampshire during the 2022 Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb. This stretch marks the steepest section of the 7.6-mile course — a grueling 22% grade that appears just before the finish line, when every ounce of strength and willpower is pushed to the limit.
“The 2022 MWARBH was an extraordinary experience to be part of,” Brian shared.
Brian completed the climb in an impressive 1:11:57, shattering his previous best from 2018 by more than an hour (2:19:36). Starting as the very last rider in a field of roughly 500 competitors, he was amazed to cross the finish line 50th overall — a powerful reminder that perseverance, resilience, and courage can carry us through even the steepest climbs and toughest challenges.
When Brian’s symptoms first appeared in 1976, he was just 14 years old. Today, he shares his journey in hopes that others living with Parkinson’s disease can find ways to improve their own quality of life — just as he has strived to do.
Not Afraid to Fall is filled with practical insights, real-life stories, challenges, hardships, and personal triumphs that illuminate what it means to live fully with Parkinson’s disease. At its heart lies Brian’s unwavering determination to keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles — a message that resonates deeply with anyone facing life’s toughest climbs.
If you or someone you love is looking for an uplifting, honest, and hopeful story about living with Parkinson’s, Not Afraid to Fall will both inspire and encourage.
"I am strongly recommending this book to nurses, health care providers, medical students, and physicians at all levels. The book reminds us that medical illnesses and their treatments have many effects on patients well beyond our office, the hospital, and the doctor-patient relationship. While it can be difficult, if the medical professions do not take these effects into consideration, we cannot fully treat the whole patient."
"Family and friends of patients with any chronic illnesses will also benefit from reading this book. We often tend to withdraw from those with illnesses that are difficult for us to comprehend and cannot relate. Brian shows us how important those family members and friends are in his struggles. Their ability to sympathize, understand, and assist are crucial to his or her battles to live a more satisfactory and productive life."
"Finally, this book deserves to not only be read but to become a guide for those with any chronic illness, not just Parkinson’s disease. It is not how Brian responds to his specific illness but that he does respond. Each patient will have their own specific problems to face. Brian shows that with grit, determination, and help from others rewards are obtainable. He encourages others to find their own compromise with their own illness and to struggle on!"
